Thestorydoesn’tstopwithnewlandbeingmade.It’salsoconstantlybeingmoved.Werevealhowthemoonnotonlycauseshugemovementsofwaterintheocean–whichweknowasthetides-butalsocreateswavesofsolidrockonland,knownas’solidearthtides’;aceaselessshapechangewhichwenevernotice.WhenamateurdiversRamonandVeronicaLlanezafoundreddustinanunderwatercaveintheBahamas,littledidtheyknowhowfarithadtravelledtogetthere.ScientistCharlieBristowhastrackedthesourceofthedusttotheSaharaandworkedouthowhugequantitiesofsolidmudgetairborneandcarriedacrosstheAtlantic–halfamilliontonnesofitperday!MuchofitendsupintheAmazon,whereithelpsfertilisetherainforest–thelungsoftheplanet.Meanwhile,inthepolarregions,mountainsarealsobeingmoved–byglaciers,whichgrinddownrock24-7andeventuallydeposititintheocean,whereithelpstriggeranotherdailychange–thistimetolife.
Intheocean,wefollowthedailygrowthofphytoplankton–microscopicplantlifefuelledbythenutrientsputintotheoceanbyerosion.Fivebilliontonnesofitgroweverydayand,likeallplants,absorbcarbondioxideandreleaseoxygen.Infact,thereissomuchphytoplanktonintheoceanthattheyareresponsibleforeverysecondbreathwetake.Theexplosivegrowthofphytoplanktontriggersanotherglobalchangeandthebiggestmassmovementofanimallifeknowntoscience–thedailymigrationofthezooplankton,whichriseupfromthedepthseverynighttofeedontheplants.InFlorida,wegetunderwaterwithagroupofintrepiddivers,whoplungeintothepitch-blackoceanforachancetoseethisglobalphenomenonupclose.Wealsolookathowscienceisnowabletotrackthegrowthofplantsonlandusingsatellites.Ifyoucouldputallthegrowthinalltheworld’sforestsintooneimaginarytree,youwouldgetasingletreethreekmtallinjustoneday.Butwithallthisgrowth,thereisaninevitableflipside-fire.ThefilmgoesbehindthesceneswiththeUSForestServiceastheytacklethebiggestwildfireinCalifornia’shistory.EverydayanareaofforesttwicethesizeoftheGrandCanyonNationalParkisburntdown.
