SamedilivesinavillageinWallonia.Heworksfromtimetotimeasagardenerandhasacloserelationshipwithhismother.Everydaylifeinthevillage,whichhasseenbettertimes,Samedi’squietandfriendlynatureandthestilllargelyintactruralsettingstandinstarkcontrasttotheheroinaddictionSamedihassufferedfromforover20years,whichonlyhisfamilyknowsabout.Hisrelationshipwithhismotherchangeswhenhemakesanotherattempttogetclean.PalomaSermon-Daï’sdocumentarypaintsarestrained,highlyprecisepictureofarelationshipmarkedbyaffectionandlovebutwhichisalsodifficulttodefineinrelationtoSamedi’sproblem.Asthecameraobservesthelong,concentratedconversationshehaswithbothhismotherandhistherapist,apictureofaddictioncomesintoviewwhichispartofafamilystructure.Thisbecomesembeddedinsomethinglargerinturnviatheindividualimagesofthevillage.PetitSamedicreatesanimageofdependenceinwhichindividual,familyandsocialcoexistenceareintertwined,withoutfallingintothetrapofsayingwhatmightbeabletosolvetheproblem.
