`TheAdventuresofBuratinoandtheGoldenKey’wasAlexanderTolstoy’sre-tellingoftheclassicstoryofPinocchio,whichherememberedfromhischildhood,buthadmodifiedandrewroteovertheyears.Tolstoy’sversionhassincebecomeaclassicinitsownrightinRussia,andthisfilmingofitwasapparentlymadeforSovietTVin1975.It’sintwoseparateparts,eachaboutanhourlong.
Buratino(i.e.Pinocchio)isplayedbyaremarkablelittleactorwho’skindofafunny-lookingkidtobeginwith,andistransformedintoamanic,almostfrighteninglycheerfulimpbythebizarrecostumeandmakeuphewears.Hishigh-pitchedvoiceandshrilllaughtercouldverywellleaveyourearsringing,ifyouhavealowtoleranceforit,buthisperformanceissharp,nuanced,andfascinatingtowatch.Thecharacterizationsoverallareverybroadandover-the-top,andtherearelamentablyclumsyattemptsatslapstickhumorbysomeoftheadultactors.Theyoungkidsinthecast,however,areadelighttowatch,astheirperformancesarenaturalandapropos,andtheircostumesandmake-uparestrikinglybeautiful,asarethesetsandlocations.Mostoftheyoungercastportraypuppetsintheguiseofvarioustraditionaltheatrecharacters,(Pierrot,Harlequin,etc.).Acoupleofscenesalmostremindmeoflive-actionversionsofJapaneseanime,i.e.cutelittlekidsinstrangecostumes,performingonbizarre,surrealsets.
Theoveralllookofthecinematographyseemsold-fashionedtome,andmostofthetimeit’shardtoguesswhenthiswasfilmed.Maybethe1940s,‘50s,early‘60s?Buttheoccasionalmusicalsetpiecesgiveitsvintageaway.Whenacharacterbreaksintosong,theirvoicessuddenlyandjarringlychangeintoanover-reverberant,highlyprocessedacoustic.Theswingingrhythmsandaccompanimentclearlyshowsignsofbeingfromthelatterhalfofthe20thcentury.Equallyjarringistheold-fashionedlookofthecinematography,setsandcostumesincontrasttotheswinging,commercialjingle-likemusic.Someofthewackiestelementsofthefilmareinthesemusicalnumbers,i.e.akick-lineoffrogs(kidsinfrogoutfits)dancingatopahigharchedwoodenbridge,beforejumpingintothewaterone-by-one.Street-cleanersdancejoyfullyinwhatappearstobeaEuropeantownofthelate1700sorearly1800s,exceptthattheyaresprayingtheairwithpressurizedwaterhosesastheydance.
Thereareafewactualpuppetsinthefilm,includingwhatappearstobeacricketplayingaviolinanddispensingsageadvice,anelementleftoverfromthetraditionalPinocchiostory.ThewilyfoxandcatwhocontinuouslytrytobamboozleBuratinoareplayedbyadultactorsasashabbypairofbeggars,theircostumesandmakeuponlysubtlysuggestinganimalcharacters.
