Withmillionsofbelieversworldwide,TheChurchoftheFlyingSpaghettiMonsteristheworld’sfastestgrowingreligion.Followersofthefaith,Pastafarians,havebeenpreachingthemessageoftheFlyingSpaghettiMonster(FSM)sinceTheProphet,BobbyHenderson’s,OpenLettertotheKansasSchoolBoardwentviralin2005.
Inresponsetotheschoolboard’sdecisiontoteachevolutionalongsidecreationismasequivalentscientifictheoriesinscienceclassesstatewide,Mr.Hendersonarguedthatitwouldthenonlybefairtoteachothercreationbeliefsinscienceclassesaswell.Specifically,hisbelief:thataFlyingSpaghettiMonstercreatedtheuniverseafewthousandyearsago.
Pastafariansacknowledgethatthereisoverwhelmingobservableevidencethatshowstheuniverseislikelybillionsofyearsold;however,theybelievethisevidencewasputinplacebyTheFSMinordertotrickscientists.Theyalsobelievethatglobalwarmingiscausedbythereductioninthepiratepopulation,sincethecorrelationbetweenthetwoisundeniable.
Withthisirrefutableevidenceinhand,theirholymissionistoincreasethepiratepopulationinordertocombatclimatechange.SuccessfulcompletionofthismissiongrantsthemaccesstoPastafarianHeaven,whereabeervolcanoandastripperfactoryawaitthem.PastafarianHellalsocontainsabeervolcanoandastripperfactory,butthebeerisstaleandthestrippershavesexuallytransmitteddiseases.
ThefilmbeginsinJanuary2016,whenTheNetherlandsgrantedofficialrecognitionthattheKerkvanhetVliegendSpaghettimonsterisareligion.Withthisrecognition,Mienke,Samir,Mathé,DirkJan,andothermembersofthechurch,begintheirmissiontogetaccesstothesamerightsDutchlawaffordsotherrecognizedreligions,startingwiththerighttowearreligiousheadwearintheirdriver’slicensephotos.
BattlinginDutchcourts,theymakethecasethatPastafarianismisjustasrationalabeliefsystemasanyotherreligion;therefore,Pastafariansshouldbeabletoexpresstheirfaithinthesamewayasallotherreligions.Whodecideswhata"realreligion"isanyway?
Meanwhile,inasmalltownoutsideBerlin,Germany,RüdigerWeidaakaBruderSpaghettusfightsasimilarfight.AsthefounderoftheKirchedesFliegendenSpaghettimonster,hewouldalsoliketoshareintherightsoftheotherChurchesinGermany:topostasignshowingthetimeandlocationofhisweeklyfaithservice,Noodlemass,heldatthefirstphysicalPastafarianChurch.InfullPirateRegalia(thechosenattireoftheGermanPastafarians),hefaithfullyevangelizestheteachingsoftheFSMtohiscongregation.
Likeanyotherreligion,Pastafarianshaveasupernaturaldeity,aprophet,andlessonsofmoralitywritteninholyscriptures.Unlikeotherreligions,Pastafarianismseemstohaveforgonethehate,bigotry,violence,andinsteadfocusestheirfaithononedogma:thereisnodogma.ThisexplainswhysomePastafarianschoosetodresslikePirates,whileotherschoosewearingacolandertoexpresstheirreligiousidentity.WearingtheColanderwasnotacommandmentfromtheirNoodlyGod,itwasthedivinerevelationofNikoAlm,memberoftheAustrianParliament,andthefirstpersontolegallywintherighttoexpresshisPastafarianfaithinhisdriver’slicensephoto.
Whileotherreligionsareconflictedwithfittingthemoralityoftheirscripturesasitwaswritteninancienttimeswiththeethicsoftoday,thePastafariansethicalteachingsevolveassocietyevolves.Theydonothatethosewithdifferentbeliefsfromtheirown,theydonotjudgeonthebasisofsexualpreference,andtheirGoddoesnotrequiresacrifices.TheseloosemoralguidelinesarehighlightedintheirversionoftheTenCommandments,theEightI’dReallyRatherYouDidn’ts.
I,PastafariisastoryaboutafewbravePastafariansevangelizingthemessageoftheFSM,whilefightingagainstintolerantskeptics,forthefreedomtoaccessreligiousprivilegesinlawgrantedtoother"real"religions.Inatimeofflat-earthers,anti-vaxxers,fakenews,andalternativefacts,thePastafariansmaybethesaviortheworldhasbeenwaitingfor.
