1960年的西班牙，馬丁和馬可斯決定去瑞士討生活，他們告別家人踏上旅途，在當時自由進步的歐洲尋找自己的新生活。二人定居在瑞士一座工業小鎮，一邊在廠里做機械工，一邊在適應着當地陌生的思維模式和生活方式。馬丁的妻子比拉爾，兒子巴普洛和馬可斯的女友瑪麗亞卡門的到來打斷了二人在這個自由國度的生活。馬丁和比拉爾的日常生活就是工作，小巴普洛則開始上學並把這個地方作為新家。當馬丁的父親去世時，他們意識到為什麼會來到這裡，而且是時候回家了。出乎他們的意料，回家比離家更加困難。
